Blake Newby, Beauty Reporter
Black women have a special relationship with hair because it is vital to our appearance. How has this time with no salons affected you?
So anyone who knows me knows how serious I am about my hair, and I’m rarely without my weave. When this all began, like most people, I thought it’d be over almost immediately so I had no idea that I’d have to be caring for my own hair for so long. But if there’s one thing about me, I’m going to figure it out. And I have been. For a little more than a month I had knotless braids that took me 10 hours to execute. It wasn’t easy, but it’s amazing the things Black women can do when we feel like our backs are up against the wall.
What products did you use to achieve your look?
Well, LOTS of pre-stretched kanekalon [hair], Jamaican black castor oil to soak my hair in while it was in the braids, Hicks edge control, some Eco-Styler…
