In the wake of mass protests around the world in response to the murder of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and countless others, the fashion industry is currently reconsidering its larger role to help amplify and uplift Black voices. Brother Vellies founder Aurora James, on the other hand, is thinking long-term about how to support the Black community and Black-owned businesses.

On Saturday, May 30, Aurora took to Instagram to outline her “15 Percent Pledge” initiative. Though addressing companies such as Whole Foods, Target, Walmart, etc. directly, she issued a call to action that involves everyone — not just major corporations. In her post, Aurora tagged nine key players in the fashion, beauty, and goods industry, writing, “I am asking you to commit to buying 15% of your products from Black-owned businesses.”
