Kylie Jenner is raising some eyebrows yet again with her latest styling choices.
On March 5, the youngest of the Kardashian-Jenner clan took to Twitter and Instagram to share a few pics from her latest photo session. In the pics, Kylie wears a hooded neon green leopard gown from Tom Ford and her new bronde hair styled in loose curls. “Giving you baby mama drama honey,” she captioned one of the pics.
Kylie looks noticeably darker and generally quite different, which made fans do a double-take — with some Twitter pointing out that she looked a lot like Beyoncé. “WHY ARE YOU COSPLAYING AS BEYONCE?” tweeted one.“I thought this was B for a second I-” wrote another. “Why is Kylie dressed as Khloe cosplaying as Beyoncé,” wrote another Twitter user.
However, other users saw the bigger issue at stake and took the chance to call out the beauty mogul, accusing her of blackfishing. “When will your family be done cosplaying Black women?” someone wrote.
“This is literally blackface and the fact that this has become normal among non-Black women is so f*cking racist and annoying. I want this trend of stereotyping, mocking, literally stealing faces from and stealing businesses from Black women to end,” commented another. “You are a white woman. Stop cosplaying Black & brown women, they are not your costume,” another user finally added.
This isn’t the first time Kylie and her family have faced accusations of cultural appropriation or even stealing ideas from Black women. In the past, the sisters have been criticized for sporting protective hairstyles worn by Black women — such as Fulani braids, box braids, and Bantu knots. Other white influencers have also been accused of “blackfishing” by wearing dark makeup and getting spray tans much darker than their natural skin tone.
At the time of writing, Kylie has not addressed the criticism that her pictures have sparked but Teen Vogue has reached out to her reps for comment and will update this story if it develops.
