While there were plenty of highlights on day one of the US Open, all eyes were on Naomi Osaka, who kicked off the first round of women’s singles with a decisive victory over Misaki Doi. It wasn’t just her spectacular play that drew attention, however: The 22-year-old tennis star used her moment in the spotlight to pay tribute to Breonna Taylor, wearing a face mask emblazoned with her name. It has been over 170 days since Taylor, an emergency medical technician, was killed in her apartment by police officers under a “no-knock” warrant, with no arrests or charges yet to be brought against the perpetrators.
