Since it exploded in popularity, TikTok has become one of the biggest beauty trend drivers with tutorial videos on everything from sock curls to cutting your bangs going viral. The latest makeup trend to hit the app, however, is a little disconcerting in comparison. Recently, TikTok users have taken to the app to create “fake mugshots” — and even beauty YouTuber James Charles has taken part, much to the disappointment of his fans.

The #mugshotchallenge trend, as it’s officially referred to, involves anything from smudging eyeliner, creating mascara runs and messing up one’s hair to painting on fake injuries (yes, including bloody noses and black eyes). Once the”makeup” is done, users then pose in a series of photos mimicking a real mugshot (i.e. looking straight ahead and then to the side).
